Training lead-free solder alloy mounting engineers
Lead-free soldering training
Prior to the enforcement of the EU's RoHS Directive (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) in 2006, we have established an in-house work qualification system for lead-free soldering operations and have been conducting training since 2005. We are working to provide high-quality lead-free products by increasing the number of qualified personnel.
Providing a great work place for employees
The Group strives to create a workplace environment where diverse human resources can be employed, equal opportunities are provided and each employee can fully demonstrate his or her abilities. The Company actively employs women for technology and sales positions and we have systems in place to support them such as child-rearing holidays, child nursing holidays and shorter working hours. Introducing members of our Group
Promoting proactive invention proposals while raising awareness for intellectual property
Ayako Kazama, Chief of the Research & Intellectual Property Section, The Development Planning Department, The Technology Development Center
I work short hours as I am raising a child. "I am thankful for the support given to me by my supervisor and colleagues and determined to work hard for the job."
The Intellectual Property Section responsible for discovery of inventions and patent application & search.
The Intellectual Property Section searches for inventions, applies for patents and investigates if our products infringe other companies' patent rights. While inventions are basically submitted by the person in charge of development, the Intellectual Property Section sometimes encourage invention proposals to protect the results of research and development.
Less disputes in intellectual property rights in the measurement industry
In the measurement industry, the intellectual property section of each company communicates and gives respect to one another and there have been very few major disputes or troubles. This is good but on the other hand, it is certain that the levels of employees' awareness for intellectual property vary. Given this situation, one of the roles of this section is to raise employees' awareness for the importance of intellectual property.
Rising risks for patent infringement from overseas expansion
The Company holds "Invention Day" in order to encourage invention proposals and help understand intellectual property. We also provide training for engineers twice a year. As there will be a higher risk of patent infringement with the expansion of our overseas business, we are committed to raising awareness and educating employees in the intellectual property.
Fulfilling customers' needs leads to inventions
More inventions are born through customer-oriented ingenuity such as customizing and improving products in response to customer requests. We will continue to actively support inventions being created from our own original ideas while manufacturing products that satisfy customers' needs.
Participation in projects broadened my knowledge and gave me an opportunity to revise my work environment.
Tatsuya Sawashiro, Chief of the System Technology Section, The Process Analysis Department, The Production Center
Envision a business thinking "food" of 10 years from now
13 employees from different responsibilities and departments worked on this project for a year. We discussed envisioning what business opportunities can be created in a changing business environment over the next 10 years and selected three themes from the SDGs to contribute the society. Our team focused on various problems surrounding food and considered solutions to put together a business concept.
Newly acquired perspectives and experience have become huge personal gains
We usually obtain customers' requests from our sales staff and design accordingly. For this project, however, we needed to think "what is necessary," Who we sell to" and further, "how we can succeed." While they were challenging tasks that I have never dealt with before, it was very meaningful experience to think from such viewpoints. Participating in study sessions and tours outside the company also helped expand my knowledge.
Reaffirm my attitude to work with speed
Through this project, I have come to want to create a better work environment more than ever so that I can take on new challenges with enough time. I will lead to improve work efficiency in the future. For example, we will listen directly to customer request at an early stage to reduce the number of specification changes. I aim to create relaxed environment where young employees can come up with new ideas to "manufacture products" that are even easier to use.
Creating a comfortable workplace with enhanced support system for women to succeed
Yuko Yagi, The Human Resources Section, The Huma Resources Department, The Administration Center
"I aim for a management position in the future while maintaining a balance with my family life."
In-house questionnaire to identify issues that were not recognized before.
I participated in the Women's Achievement Promotion Committee after being asked by my supervisor. When formulating an action plan, we conducted an internal questionnaire to identify issues. I believe we have a comfortable workplace, however, there were unexpected opinions in the answers that made me realize some aspects I did not see in the past.
Promote creating specific solutions and enhancing systems for support
I reported to all employees as an internal announcement to raise issues after the end of activities in December. I am currently a member of a new project team and working on creating concrete measures for problem solving. In terms of system enhancement, I find it necessary to make them more flexible and tangible, for example, extending the period of shorter working hours after childcare leave.
Participation in club activities help communication at work
I joined the baseball club managers, ski and snowboard clubs for the company's club activities. I sometimes found it difficult to respond to enquiries from unfamiliar employees in the past, but I know more people now through the club activities and it has become easier to communicate at work.
Supportive and attractive workplace for both men and women
I believe that a company where women can play an active role is a company where men can enrich both work and family life. We are working to enhance the support system that enables flexible working styles at each life stage such as childcare and nursing care. We aim to create work environment attractive to employees where they feel supported and want to work for a long time.
Introducing the new personnel system that responds to the diverse society and changing times
Keiichiro Daimi, Executive Officer, Deputy General Manager in the Administration Center, General Manager in the Human Resource Department
It is a new system that we have been working on for three years. "It is very detailed and I want to implement it gradually observing changes."
New system caters for expansion of female's job categories
We introduced the new personnel system in October 2015 aimed to respond to the social changes such as declining birth rate and aging population. It was necessary to make change as we found it impossible to deal with the human resources by the uniform approach given the increased importance of capacity building for successors and expansion of job categories for female.
Active career development in the desired profession
Under the new system, the General Careers are divided into the Comprehensive Career and Specialist Career and employees select their job types. While those who aim to become an executive and try highly challenging tasks can select the Comprehensive Career, those who aim to expand their jobs while raising the level of skills in specific tasks can select the Specialist Career and they both can build careers that suit their job types. Each employee identifies desired job type, making it easier to obtain satisfactory evaluations.
Emphasis on diversity and work-life balance
We also promote employment of foreigners and people with disabilities, re-employment of elderly people and support for balancing work with childcare and nursing care. As part of support for work-life balance in this system, it is possible to change from the Comprehensive Career to the Specialist Career. Under the new system, we will streamline operations aiming to increase the rate of paid leave and reduce overtime work by 10%.
Establishing the new system and improve the workforce
To establish the new system, it is essential to change employee awareness and particularly to provide guidance for managers is important and it will take time. Nevertheless, we believe that by being properly evaluated in the desired occupation type, each employee will be more motivated and have more sense of advancement leading to the improvement we aim for as a company.
Reflecting customer feedback in new product development
Yuki Goto, Analytical Instruments Section, Sensor Technology Department, Technology Development Center
Currently I take a correspondence course in English "to acquire language skills so that I can explain our company and products to overseas customers."
Our department is engaged in developing products near the customers
Besides developing products, the Analytical Instruments Section is responsible for attending demonstrations and seminars with the Sales Department to introduce products to customers from an engineer's point of view. While I was nervous at first, I received advice from supervisors and have come to realize the importance of meeting customers.
You need to have the knowledge and skills to explain products in your own words
The target is mainly customers of companies, etc., but we sometimes need to talk to infants and high school students at events. In order to be able to explain products in one's own words according to different audience, we also need to understand the products well and to acquire skills to identify the required information through the conversation to properly convey it.
It is rewarding when I find my explanation leads to achievement
I am really happy when I receive a good feedback like "it was easy to understand" or "thank you" from our customers who use our products for the first time after explaining the features of our products and the differences with other companies' products. If we receive orders from those customers, I feel rewarded for the achievements I made.
Expand market share with new products that reflect customer feedback
As I have used our products since I was a student, I definitely want to be involved in the development of new analytical instrument products. I am learning from our customers for the future development. I want to develop products that meet customer needs to contribute to the expansion of our market share.
I want to contribute to solving environmental problems in China through my work
Hiroyuki Seki, The Chinese Market Section, No1 Overseas Sales Department, The Overseas Sales Division
We have serious air pollution in my hometown, Harbin. "In Japan, you have clean air and people have good manners. Japan is a comfortable country to live."
Joining the Company to learn "Japanese manufacturing"
I joined the company, a manufacturer, to learn "Japanese manufacturing" after graduating a Japanese university and graduate school. I find the dedication to work by Japanese people is wonderful and I believe that our products and technical capabilities will surely contribute to improving the environment in China.
Appreciation by customers in person felt rewarding
I sometimes accompany my colleagues as an interpreter when we receive visitors from China and our executives travel abroad. It is a valuable experience to meet with important customers and when the quality and performance of our products were appreciated at the facilities where they were actually installed, I felt tremendously rewarded. While I mainly communicate with our customers by email and telephone, I would like to have more opportunities to meet with them in person going forward.
More understanding for different cultures and opening up to the world
It has been 3 years since I joined the Company and I still learn the Japanese culture and language from the education officers. I also receive instructions at work in details and it is a very supportive workplace. I study English and I would like to contribute to the solutions for environmental problems not only in China but also in other countries in the future. Increasing the understanding of different cultures will benefit to the Company and will help me develop my career.
